Let Your Wrinkles Be Your Road Map

We recently had a birthday in the boutique (though we won’t name names), and it got us talking about getting older. After the fact, we realized the term “anti-aging” kept coming up. That pervasive idea has infiltrated everything from TV ads about the latest potion meant to reverse your wrinkles to Pinterest feeds claiming you can get younger-looking skin with just two ingredients! And it got us thinking – why are we “anti” something that every human experiences and no one can prevent?

So we thought we’d address a few things about aging that we think are pretty great. Cheese and wine get better with age; and where cheese and wine go, we’ll be sure to follow.

Age is Just a Number

We all know that’s a lie – your age does matter. And if it doesn’t, it should! Each year you’ve spent surviving this life you should wear as a badge of honor. Our culture isn’t exactly known for celebrating women for getting older, but we are our culture, so we have to at least try to make those changes.

Imagine your life just five or even ten years ago, and really try to remember how you used to think and feel and act. Now think of yourself current day, and how much better you are at processing emotions, making decisions, and getting what you want. Aside from the great metabolism, wouldn’t you rather be where you are now?

“Aging is out of your control. How you handle it, though, is in your hands…. In my older face, I see my life. Every wrinkle, every smile line, every age spot. There is a saying that with age, you look outside what you are inside. If you are someone who never smiles, your face gets saggy. If you’re a person who smiles a lot, you will have more smile lines. Your wrinkles reflect the roads you have taken; they form the map of your life. My face reflects the wind and sun and rain and dust from the trips I’ve taken. My face carries all my memories. Why should I erase them?”

– Diane Von Furstenberg

Confidence is Sexy

It’s been said so many times that it’s certainly a cliche – but cliches are just that for a reason. Sure, your 20s are a great time full of adventure and intrigue and a complexion most would trade their first born for. But that doesn’t mean that time was all flowers and rainbows.

How many times during your 20s did you not speak up for yourself, or let something go because you weren’t totally confident delivering the message you knew to be true? And how often does that happen now?

Confidence that comes with age can’t be earned early, which is what makes it such a desirable state to be in. Confidence when you’re young comes from a lethal combination of arrogance, youth-obsessed culture, and complete naivety.

We’ll take a heaping spoonful of age-induced confidence, thankyouverymuch.

“I am calmer; I know who I am. And as a result, I feel much sexier…. There’s always going to be somebody younger or sexier. That’s why I like to say, and it’s become my famous line, ‘Funny doesn’t sag.'”

– Reese Witherspoon

Getting older can be challenging in many ways that we can’t control, from arthritis to wrinkles and beyond. So why are we so hard on ourselves instead of celebrating all the years we’ve managed to survive?

At La Vie en Rose, we want women to feel revered for all they’ve accomplished – every ring their human tree has earned, every laugh line and stretch mark their body proudly displays, every heartache managed and turned into love – we are with you. And we see you for exactly who you are.

Love and flowers,
La Vie en Rose
